City of Eau Claire Staff Tours The Sonnentag

Eau Claire has been buzzing with excitement as we prepare for the grand opening of the highly-anticipated Sonnentag Complex. Situated on Menomonie Street near Clairemont Avenue and Carson Park, this 225,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility, which will officially open its doors in mid-September, promises to be a game-changer for our community as it’s poised to attract thousands to the area each year through new events and programs offered by UW-Eau Claire in partnership with Mayo Clinic Health System and others.

City staff had the opportunity to tour the nearly-finished facility in its final days of construction this August to see firsthand its impressive array of features. Find a behind-the-scenes look at our visit below, but first, let’s take a look back at how the complex came to be after over a decade of meticulous planning.

Project Background

The Sonnentag Complex was made possible by the remarkable generosity of UW-Eau Claire alumni John and Carolyn Sonnentag, who contributed approximately $70 million in cash and land toward the project.
This substantial donation, one of the largest in Wisconsin history, transformed a vision first proposed by the UW system in 2014 into a reality. Initially, in August 2014, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation announced a commitment of around $10 million from the Sonnentags and their family foundation. Then, on December 6, 2021, the foundation accepted the historic $70 million gift, which fully supported the project’s philanthropic goals. The remaining $45 million needed to complete the complex came through financial and in-kind contributions from UW–Eau Claire students, the Pablo Foundation, Xcel Energy, the City of Eau Claire, and additional partners, which allowed construction to begin in spring 2022 on the former sites of Student Transit, County Materials Corporation, and Fabick Cat.

During the planning and construction phase, public-private partnerships were formed to flesh out programming for the center, which led to the facility now becoming the home of:

  • The Sonnentag Event Center
  • The John & Carolyn Sonnentag Fieldhouse
  • Blugold Athletics
  • UW-Eau Claire’s Center for Health & Wellbeing
  • Mayo Clinic Health System Diagnostic Imaging & Sports Medicine Center
Day-to-day operations of the sprawling complex will be managed by CENTERS, a leading organization experienced in operating multi-use venues. Their team will be responsible for meeting stakeholder needs through the facility’s events and programs.

Project Goals

UW-Eau Claire, the driving force behind The Sonnentag, first brought forward the idea of building this transformative addition in 2014 with the hope that it would elevate both the university’s and the community’s profiles. Faculty’s vision at the time was that Eau Claire would be positioned as a leader in sports, recreation, and community engagement, and over time, other benefits emerged as well.

1. To Improve Facilities
The Sonnentag would provide state-of-the-art facilities for athletic programs and recreational activities, enhancing student experiences and attracting more prospective students.

2. To Promote Health & Wellness
The Sonnentag would help to encourage a culture of health and wellness among students and community members through access to recreational facilities and programs.

3. To Increase Economic Impact
The Sonnentag would boost the local economy by attracting visitors for events, which would in turn support local businesses and create job new opportunities.

4. To Bolster Community Connection
The Sonnentag would help strengthen the university’s ties with the local community by offering a venue for events, sports, and recreational activities that benefit both students and residents.

5. To Foster Collaboration
The Sonnentag would create a space for collaboration among university departments, community organizations, and businesses, promoting partnerships that benefit the region.
