The Cannery Redevelopment District, established in May 2008, is located north of Madison Street alongside the West Bank of the Chippewa River. The City of Eau Claire adopted the West Riverside District Plan in 2011, which includes the 30-acre Cannery District, and the city’s Redevelopment Authority adopted the Cannery District Redevelopment Plan in 2019. Projects have been underway since.
The Cannery District is already a popular spot for Eau Claire residents thanks to the long-established Eau Claire Children’s Theatre, a recent multi-million dollar renovation of The Brewing Projekt’s brewery and taproom, continuation of pedestrian trails in the area including to the iconic High Bridge, and two new apartment complexes. The redevelopment plan intends to continue capitalizing on the area’s success by drawing inspiration from the nearby North Barstow Redevelopment District, particularly Phoenix Park across the river.
The Cannery District is in Tax Increment Financing District (TID) #13, a mixed-use TID that encompasses 41.5 acres and 28 parcels.
